My introduction to things fannish was reading The Hobbit in 1979, at age thirteen, and The Lord of the Rings the following year. It all snowballed from there. I went to my first convention (Chattacon) in 1983, and learned to knit in 1984 for the sole purpose of learning how to make myself an authentic Doctor Who scarf. Knitting has been an important part of my life ever since, and I haven't forgotten that it came from my fannish roots.
I've been writing fanfic, mostly slash, since long before I knew what it was (also, sadly, long before I knew what a Mary Sue was), but I've only been publishing since 1998. I got started on the internet on Usenet in Highlander fandom, around 1996. Since then, I've hopped around to a ton of fandoms, only a few of which I've listed above. I still write fanfic, but I haven't published in a long time. I'm a little bit of an aca-fan, interested in what makes fans, fans, and what fandom is. (I'm also fascinated by theories from people who clearly have no idea what makes fans, fans, or what fandom is.)
These days, my main contribution to fandom is writing sporadic fanfic reviews, and occasionally dipping my toe into discussions.
