Ultraman: Rising is a Netflix original film created by Shannon Tindle. The film tells the story of Ken Sato, a famous baseball player and inheritor of the title and powers of Ultraman, in his struggle to balance being Ultraman with the rest of his life. The film focuses on his struggle to raise a baby Kaiju whom he rescued after the KDF (Kaiju Defense Force) attacked her mother, as well as his strained relationship with his father and the question of what it means to be Ultraman.

Initial Release & Fan Reactions
Upon Ultraman: Rising's release on Netflix, on June 14, 2024, initial reactions were almost universally positive. Many fans were drawn in by the vibrant, stylized animation, but stayed for the compelling story and heartbreaking moments throughout the film. While the film did not immediately attract a large fandom, the fans who did join were very dedicated, posting the first fics on Ao3 within days of the release, and posting fanart even sooner. These early fanworks were mainly split into two categories: those focusing on the family dynamics in the film, and those focused solely on Ken Sato, usually in the form of X-reader fics. Ken Sato's design and characterization, along with the lack of characters available in canon to ship him with, led to an immediate explosion of x-reader fics on both tumblr and Ao3 after the release, which paved the foundation for the fandom to come.
