Tumbler is a background Manhattan newsboy from Newsies, named by the fandom. His name predates the popular blog site Tumblr. He is credited on IMDB as Tumble Boy, played by Jimmy Grant, but does not appear in the film credits.[2] The name Tumbler may have been canonized by Kenny Ortega at the 25th anniversary reunion.[3]
Fandom
The modern Newsies fandom is aware of Tumbler's fanon origins.[4] He was originally named Spitshake by fans Pixie and Smiley, as he is identifiable through a scene where he and fellow newsie Skittery hug and spit-shake, and was also nicknamed The Littlest Newsie, but the name Tumbler is most popular in current fandom.[5] His name seems to have come from a Newsies fansite predating 1999, which listed both Tumbler and Slider.[6] He is frequently pictured in a shot from the outro, where he dances in a "tumbling" way, his namesake.[7] Fanfiction was written about him as early as 2002.[8]
A character week was hosted by Smiley94 in 2009.[9]
