Transformers Animated is an animated television series in the Transformers franchise that began airing in 2007 and ended in 2009. It has the same general plot as most of the other series in the Transformers franchise: the heroic Autobots, led by Optimus Prime, battle the evil Decepticons, led by Megatron. It is set in Detroit, in the twenty-second century.

Fandom

Transformers Animated has a fandom tag on AO3 with over five hundred works and a World filter on fanfiction.net with over two thousand. The fandom is relatively small, as many of its previous participants have left since the series stopped airing, but dedicated.

Characters and Pairings

The most popular characters to write, according to AO3's tags, are Optimus Prime, Megatron, Prowl, and Bumblebee, all characters who have appeared before and since in many other Transformers series. Their depictions are fairly close to the original Transformers series in basic character and personality traits, except for Prowl, who was an uptight police officer and tactician in the original but is a quiet, nature-loving ninja in Animated.

The most common pairings are Megatron/Optimus Prime, Blurr/Shockwave, Jazz/Prowl, and Megatron/Starscream. With the notable exception of Blurr/Shockwave, these pairings are common across all Transformers series, and the popularity of some of them likely stems from the original series. Blurr/Shockwave, however, is unique to this series as a pairing, possibly because Shockwave is depicted very differently in every other series: in Animated, he is a Decepticon double agent operating under the name "Longarm Prime" who has become head of Autobot Intelligence, while usually he is a solitary scientist who rarely interacts with other characters. The pairing Bumblebee/Blitzwing ended up becoming very popular years after the show's end on Tumblr.

Continuity

Transformers Animated is in its own continuity, which it shares with no other Transformers animated series. As with all Transformers series, it has an accompanying toy line and some comics. A pair of books, The AllSpark Almanac and The AllSpark Almanac II, were published; they were created by the series' writers, and provide more information on virtually every aspect of the series.[1] Persistent rumors state that a fourth season of the series is in development, based on the show's IMDB page[2], which does not give an end date for the series' run. While it is known that a fourth season was planned, and the writers' plans for it are detailed in the AllSpark Almanac II, no evidence of its actual production has ever surfaced.
