Torchwood was a Yahoo group that had moderated membership, with 775 members at its close. The group's peak period was in 2007-2008. While posting diminished rapidly by 2012, when it was active it had as many as 600 messages a month. Discussion focused largely on episodes and issues revolving around the show and casting.

Description

Outside the BBC, beyond the media. The 21st Century is when Torchwood gets a Yahoo Group, and you gotta be ready.

Welcome to the yahoo group for the sci-fi TV series "Torchwood". It is here for discussion and for the weekly schedule column "Torchwood This Week", detailing all known broadcasts of the show. Do not list spoilers in the subject line of a post. Give the episode number, title, or broadcast date and note "spoiler", then leave spoiler space in the message before discussing a spoiler. Any aspects of the show can be discussed, but you must be considerate to each other and to the people involved in making Torchwood (actors, writers, directors, and crew). Remember the difference between the character and the actor.

Torchwood Series 1 and 2 (including radio plays) are not spoilers. Doctor Who Series 1,2,3,4,+ The Next Doctor, and The Sarah Jane Adventures Series 1 are not spoilers, though remember to based discussion off Torchwood. Torchwood: Children Of Earth, The Sarah Jane Adventures Series 2+3, and Doctor Who 2009 Specials (Planet Of The Dead onwards) require spoiler space. Children Of Earth will be released for non-spoiler discussion on September 1 based on current plans.

At around Midnight UK Time on Monday October 17, 2005, news broke that Doctor Who would spawn a spinoff series - Torchwood. It occured to me that there should be a group online to discuss the series when people want to do so. Not seeing one yet - I created it.

Could be really great. Could be another forgotten spinoff that just didn't make the grade. Could be anywhere in between. And hopefully this group will be here for the success/failure/in-between-ness that awaits.

Just mind your manners with each other and enjoy the ride.

I tried to read up on Torchwood as much as possible. It seems that it is a bit risqué and American TV won't carry it at all. So, something tells me I'll be replying on usenet and IRC.

> The current version of Doctor Who is aimed at "family" audiences, > while Torchwood is aimed at "adult" audiences after the 9PM UK > programming watershed. There is every reason to believe that there > will be more gore, violence, coarser language, and sexual innuendo > than Doctor Who. If you have children who may be interested in this > series, pre-screen the episodes first to ensure that the material is > appropriate. If not, they still have Doctor Who, and The Sarah Jane > Adventures will be aimed at a younger audience when it arrives in > 2007.

It's definitely not for kiddies! The gay content of the show is definitely going to, 'ahem' alienate viewers.

The scene with the young couple in the nightclub and their subsequent both going off with the sex alien for instance. Similarly the episode with the paedophile and the killer fairies.

Torchwood plays very heavily on its sexuality, and it's going to be interesting how this goes down 'groan' with the viewing public. Roll on Sunday!

I am quite conservative in some of my views, but if anyone ever called me a Conservative, they would apologise through a court judgement with appropriate compensation attached.

And as this is a group devoted the the wonderful and gorgeous John Barrowman, let's not forget that John has declared his intention to enter into a civil partnership with Scott., his partner of 14 years or so. The Conservatives voted against civil partnerships all the way through the legislative process - just as they voted against equality of the age of consent.

I know through personal experience that not all "Conservatives are alienated by gays", but the Conservatives at large have done nothing - ever - to recognise the validity of gay relationships. Any support shown by the mealy-mouthed leaders of today'sTory party incumbents is not borne out by their parliamentary and extra-parliamentary attitudes towards the sweeping changes that have given recognition to the rights of gay people over the last nine and a half years.

It's not fashionable to congratulate the Labour Government, but, as I said above, some of my views are conservative, so I will withstand fashion and say "Thank-you, Tony and your party for giving gay people the governmental and legislative respect and dignity that we deserve".

I wouldn't count out Torchwood just yet. For one thing, Russell T Davies is still dealing with his partner's illness as well as projects that he had signed on to do before his partner got sick, and once things settle down, who knows? He might decide to TW all over again. If he does, great, but I'm not going to be like some of the Negative Nellies I've seen around who have all but rung the death knell for the show. Also, that greatcoat is more than likely one of many that were used during the series; as I recall, they had differing lengths for when Capt. Jack was standing still, or when he was running, so it could be any one of them.

>>Total agreement. I lost about ten hours of my life when it was originally on that I will never get back. My best friend was excited to tell me that it was going to be on BBCA and I just told her "so what" and then spent another hour trying to explain why I really didn't want to see it ever again.

> Agreed. Miracle Day was awful.

If you watch this mess you will regret it. Don't say you have not been warned. Given the apparent demise of Torchwood could we hope that Captain Jack might return to Doctor Who?

Unfortunately, what pfyre said is true. RTD originally spun a series with Eve called "Excalibur". When that didn't sell, he spun "Torchwood" with her as the second lead and the "Heart of Torchwood". He has talked about both of those things in interviews, although of course he gave it a different spin. He really does think that she is the best Welsh actress ever. I have no idea why. Gwen was also supposed to be everyone's love interest (and Ianto was supposed to be an elderly "Alfred" type character who dies in the Cyberwoman episode) which is why the affair with Owen happened. Unfortunately for Ianto, the fans and the people at the BBC liked Ianto more than Gwen. No one has said anything publicly, but a lot of people think that's why Ianto died in Children of Earth.

Eep, I meant "unfortunately for RTD", not " Unfortunately for Ianto".

Contrary to what I said previously about there being little hope of Torchwood ever returning I now believe that it is very possible it can be resurrected. John Barrowman is currently tied up with The Arrow tv show but that may end in the next year or so and John just might want to reprise his role as Captain Jack Harkness in a few more episodes.

I know it is almost five years since we last saw Torchwood but none of the cast have actually said that it has been cancelled. They brought back The X-Files after thirteen years didn't they so anything is possible! I certainly would not write it off yet and I hope none of you will either. I could be wrong but something tells me we have not seen the last of it. Keep the faith!
