Top Gun is an 1986 action film about military aviation starring Tom Cruise as Maverick. The sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, also stars Miles Teller as Rooster and Glen Powell as Hangman.
The release of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022 breathed new life into the fandom. Only a couple hundred fics on AO3 were written prior to Maverick's release[1], and as of 2024, over 12,000 fics have been written since its release[2] and it remains an active fandom.

Military Propaganda
Prior to the film's release, some folks began to criticise Top Gun Maverick as military propaganda, in a similiar vein to criticism of the MCU. Some Top Gun fans dismissed this entirely, whereas others acknowledged it, and either refused to watch the new film, or engaged with the film anyway with the propaganda in mind whilst watching and interacting.
