It's always good when an author sits down and asks herself, "Now, what might have happened if one day in the army Jim was thrown over a vaulting horse, paddled, and used brutally by a nameless officer?"

Five years. Hell of a thing. More than twice as long as he was with Carolyn. A damn time longer than he's ever been with anyone. And at this point he's pretty sure he's never going to be with anyone else. Which is fine. Things with Blair are good. And if they don't have sex twice a day like they did in the beginning, that's okay. Normal.

Even without as much sex as they once had, he knows he loves Blair. Even says so occasionally, as a treat. For him, not for Blair. Blair doesn't need that kind of reassurance.

Jim's train of thought is interrupted when Blair shifts on the couch to tuck his feet under Jim's thighs. Cold feet. "Why don't you wear socks if your feet are so fucking cold?" He's not really annoyed, just likes sounding that way.

Why you should read this: Aforementioned vaulting horse, nameless officer, spanking, and other fun activities involving Blair Sandburg, Love Child.

What might throw you off stride: Those who are made nervous by spanking will be made nervous. Maybe.

This is another kink!Jim story, one I come back to time and time again. Kass gives us a relationship between Jim and Blair that is comfortable after five years, and a Jim who has begun remembering a "hazing incident" from his early army days. Doubtfully, he tells Blair about it and admits he'd like them to try it.

Jim's memory is hot and his hesitancy to tell Blair about his fantasies is believable. Jim is surprised by Blair's immediate acceptance and willingness to give him what he wants.

This isn't a Jim Ellison who needs to get hurt to make up for having to be in control all the time, he's just a man who's been dreaming of a past experience that made him sexually turned on. When Blair gives him what he asks for, it's spectacular and he realizes he's not a young man in a darkened barracks, but safe in his own room with his own loving partner.

Best FF That Could Be Used As a Recruiting Tool for the U.S. Army. In Certain Populations.: Thought About the Army, by Kass, aka kassrachel. The Sentinel, Jim/Blair. I recommended "Throwback" instead of this one because they're both good, and I assume everyone's already read this one. (If you haven't, why haven't you? And you call yourself a slash fan. Read all of Kass's stuff immediately.) For some reason, TS writers seem to assume that the natural progression of Jim and Blair's relationship is: friends, UST, RST, eternal commitment, BDSM. (Not that I'm arguing - hey, I'm all for the BDSM, and it certainly does enliven long-term relationships, but why does everyone conclude that Jim will go from lusting after Blair to fucking Blair to handcuffing him to a light fixture?) Here we have a perfect example of true excellence in a long-term relationship. Jim has a sexual need. With prompting, he communicates it to Blair. Blair meets said need enthusiastically. And with silk neckties. (Well, I mean, what other use would Blair have for a necktie?) I'm not saying bondage is necessary for a long-term relationship, mind you. But it certainly adds to the fun. (NOTE: Apparently my brain was not functioning when I selected this alternate; it actually has more non-con in it than "Throwback." I'm picking a second alternate, which will be TS and certified non-con free. See below.)
