From the Editorial
Though They Sink Through the Sea... has truly been a labor of love for me. It came into being because of my unwillingness to accept the loss of Catherine. Yes, in a real-life situation certainly I would want Vincent to love again, in time - he of all beings deserves love. (I know, I know; take a number and go stand in line - right behind me!) But BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is not real life (much as I wish otherwise); it is a beautiful, mystical, romantic fantasy - and as such, I believe that Vincent truly could not have survived the death of his soulmate, and so, for me, Catherine did not die. I found the writing of the first couple of chapters as difficult as many of you will find the reading of them. Often I had to stop to allow myself to cry, as the writing brought back all my grief and pain. I only hope that for you also, as for me, the joy of the second half overshadows the sorrow of the beginning.
If there are any among you with medical backgrounds, please don't chastise me for my disregard of medical fact in bringing Catherine back. I am sure that my ignorance of such matters must be glaring to you. So be it. I wanted Catherine back, so I invented something that sounded reasonable to me. Having thus made my bed, I now lie in it perfectly content with the explanation I created.

This well-written SND novelette opens with the beginning of “Walk Slowly.” After Catherine's funeral, it hop-skips in short scenes to the explosion of the Compass Rose and then to the end of Invictus. Then Joe tells Diana that Catherine is alive...but comatose and under police protection. Does Diana tell Vincent? Does Catherine rouse from the coma? What do you think? This now-familiar scenario is competently presented, with good characterizations and literate writing. The second half of the story consists solely of sex and is pretty graphic, once it gets going.
