 :::sob::: Dammit, this is a fabulous story! (And I mean "dammit" in the best possible way, as in "I can't believe how wonderful this is and why can't *I* write such beautiful stories?!") How shall I count the ways? Angst, check. Partnerly concern in both directions, check. Investigative smartness, check. Satisfying (if sad) conclusion to a loose end from the show, check. A sweet, heartwarming closing, check. Love it, love it, love it... maybe you will, too.

“Paper Hearts” is an impossible episode for me to watch. What Mulder does is so reckless, so selfish and unthinking, that it makes me want to run out of the room. His pain at never knowing who the final victim was, his fear that he would never be sure that it wasn’t his sister, is unbearable for me to witness. My favorite story for “Paper Hearts” is “Things That Lie Outside” by JET. Her fic takes Mulder’s pain and uncertainty, and transfers it quite plausibly onto Scully. She takes on Mulder’s burden, and works the case alone, searching for the last missing girl. JET’s use of language is lovely and lyrical. Her handling of the relationship between M&S is delicate and emotive. I love the way she uses the plot to illustrate how the characters dance around their feelings for one another. If you only read one fic for this episode, it should be this one. I highly recommend everything by JET.
