The Ties That Bind is a digital zine centered around the friendships in the games leading up to Kingdom Hearts III.

About

The project was announced on Destiny-Islander's Tumblr blog on November 15, 2018, with an open call for artists, writers, graphic editors, and cosplayers[1]. The digital and free zine would focused on themes of friendship, one of the central themes of Kingdom Hearts.

Contributors of all skill levels were welcome to contribute so long as submissions were safe for work, did not include romantic content, and were submitted to the project's designated email address by January 18, 2019. By the deadline, the organizers reported that over 200 pieces were submitted for the zine[2].

The zine was released for free on Gumroad on January 20, 2019, with a total of 221 creators[3]. The zine was re-released a day after with corrections to the credits section of the zine[4]. By February 12, 2019, the organizers reported that the zine had been downloaded two thousand times[5].

I’m so glad. We worked really hard on it. With all of the leaks and everyone leaving social media, I wanted to get it out there as soon as possible. May or may not have pulled three all-nighters to make it happen!!

Destiny, the zine came out beautifully!! I love the water background in the fic pages, I found myself thinking more than once how much I'd love to have some of that as stationary, haha

I've never really followed Kingdom Hearts nor played a single one of the games (I followed you years ago for FF content lol) but I had to go and check out the zine because I knew how much work had gone into it and I just had to see it and appreciate the cool work that the fandom had done. I just looked through The Ties That Bind fanzine by @destiny-islanders and @novallion and a couple of pages in I started to cry. The love that KH fans have for the series is incredible and overwhelmed me. I hope that the series that we all hold close to our hearts continues to pull us together to create amazing things like this fanzine beyond KH3 😊
