Reactions and Reviews
This is a wonderful story, which takes you on an emotional rollercoaster ride. The story starts in 1981. Doyle has married and left CI5. After his wedding he has never seen Bodie again. Bodie has severed all contact, without telling Doyle why. Running into Bodie again when he goes on a fishing trip, Doyle demands that Bodie tells him why he disappeared from his life.
Bodie admits loving Doyle and he couldn't cope with being just friends. After a weekend full of loving, they both have to return to there every day life. They agree to meet every third Friday in October.
The story finishes in 1990, with not only a believeble description of a 'once a year' meeting, but also the difficulties living without each other and being a loving husband and a dedicated agent. [1]
I think that to get the most out of it, you have to know the play "Same Time, Next Year". A boyfriend was in a semiprofessional production of it when I was much younger, and it kinda stuck with me. Tthe Alan Alda film version was a bit too sentimental for me (lacking the edge I think it needs). This story catches the nuances well, even if the scenarios are different. [2]
It has been a long time favourite of mine. I had never heard of the play or the film, only knew about it through the reference at the end of the story, so I can't compare, I do know that the story captivated me from start to finish. [3]
Great story. It really captured the ups and downs of a lifetime, and honestly my heart stopped a little at the end. *G* [4]
Good to see that they can overcome all the odds, even if some are truly heartbreaking. [5]
I adore the heart of this story - a love between them that doesn't fade away with the years, that is so much more than lust, that pulls them back together again and again, and is the only real comfort that either of them have. I can't help but read on and on to find out what happens to them in the end - surely they stay together, but how? How can they possibly? - and that's the kind of story I love, a story that keeps me reading, and keeps me wanting more, just as the lads do...[6]
A delightful, quixotic premise that, damn it, shouldn't work but does. Doyle's married and gone from CI5, Bodie's still there. A chance encounter leads to them meeting up for the same three days every year (1981-1990). [7]
