The Soul of a Hero is a Boku no Hero Academia zine focused on Rodydeku, the ship between Midoriya Izuku and Rody Soul.

The project was announced on November 24, 2021.[1] The interest check ran from November 30 to December 30, 2021.[2] Moderator applications ran from December 14, 2021 to January 14, 2022.[3] The interest check results were posted on January 17, 2022.[4] While the zine was originally going to be digital only, due to the interest in a physical zine the decision was made to switch the medium to both physical and digital.[5] As a result, a second interest check ran from January 29 to February 28, 2022.[6] Contributor applications ran from February 1 to March 10, 2022.[7]

Preorders opened on September 1, 2022[8] with the following price tiers:

  • Selfie Bundle ($15 USD) - PDF
  • Long Distance Bundle ($20 USD) - Physical Zine & PDF
  • Pen Pal Bundle ($25 USD) - Acrylic Charm, Print, 3 Die-Cut Stickers, Sticker Sheet, Enamel Pin, Digital Merch
  • Care Pack Bundle ($45 USD) - Physical Zine & PDF, Acrylic Charm, Print, 3 Die-Cut Stickers, Sticker Sheet, Enamel Pin, Digital Merch
  • Rody Soul Plush ($50 USD) - Limited edition 20cm Rody Soul Plush

Stretch goals included a postcard print at 50 orders, a photobooth strip print at 75 orders, an acrylic charm/ornament at 100 orders, and an enamel pin at 150 orders.[9] A 5th stretch goal of 2 button pins was added after all stretch goals were unlocked early on. The Long Distance, Pen Pal, and Care Package Bundles were all eligible for stretch goals. A giveaway for 1 Selfie bundle and 1 Long Distance bundle ran from September 26 to September 30, 2022.[10] Pre-orders closed on October 1, 2022 with over 200 orders.[11]

Shipping began on February 17, 2023 for all orders without a plush.[12]

On March 15, 2023, a production update for the plushies was posted. The update stated that the plush manufacturer had said that the plush sample was almost done, and that it would be done "mid February", but they hadn't heard from the manufacturer since.[13] They also stated that they had reached out to a new manufacturer and paid them for a sample. They posted an update on April 26, 2023 that the new sample was complete, along with an image of the finished sample, and that they were moving forward with production.[14] Another update was posted on June 19, 2023 stating production for the plushies was complete, and that they were on the way to the shipping moderator.[15] Pre-orders that included a plushie were shipped out on July 11, 2023.[16]

I especially love the merch; the RodyDeku in the snow keychain actually reminds me of older official Pokemon Art when it comes to the characters which gives it a nostalgic feel[27]
