The Science Fiction Museum was based in Salem, Oregon.
It was a group of fans who wanted to preserve science fiction fanworks, create visibility for mainstream science fiction movies, television shows, and books, have a meeting space for fans of various fandoms, and more.
One of its creators/leaders may be Ed Stiner.
From a 1997 flyer printed in Bright Center of the Universe #7:
The Science Fiction Museum wants you!
We are looking for people who like science fiction. The Science Fiction Museum is a nonprofit organization incorporated in 1990. Our purpose is the preservation and display of the works of people that best illustrate our changing fascination with the future and how that future compares with today's reality. Members work together toward the common goal of "Preserving Yesterday s Tomorrow. Everything is done by volunteers and we are supported by memberships and donations. One of our major goals is getting permanent display space. We have a portable glass showcase and easel boards that we take to science fiction events.
You like science fiction, we invite you to join The Science Fiction Museum.
Members receive Yesterday's Tomorrow a newsletter about the activities, events, goals and milestones set by the Museum. Yesterday's Tomorrow contains: selected works of fiction by our members and other contributors (space permitting).
We welcome your donations of time, money or items for display or for fund-raising. Colections for display are needed. No less important are items for the office and storage space, or items suitable for auction or other fund-raising purposes. You and your friends can become "Founder" with a cash donation. You could donate duplicates from your collection. Your business could become a sponsor. There are many ways you can help.
Each year, three members are elected to the Science Fiction Museum Board of Directors. (Any current member is eligible and may ran for this office.) Members are elected for three years at our annual meeting in November (during Orycon). You become a member when you make a donation of member when you make a donation ($10 or more to receive Yesterday's Tomorrow by mail).
The Science Fiction Museum has six main building goals:
1) A display section where collection, artifacts, and other items of special interest will be shown. This is our main display area.
2) A research library where science fiction books, magazines, and fanzines can be examined or read.
3) A media room where science fiction movies and TV shows can be viewed. SF related records and tapes will also be available.
4) A gaming room filled with science fiction games. Board games, computer games and virtual reality.
5) A gallery, where we can show off some of the great art and costumes inspired by science fiction and and retrospectives on the futures of the past as shown in illustrations, art and costumes.
6) A meeting room for special events. Events like "Meet the Author" - "Readings by an Author" - "How To's" in fields like like makeup, animation, special effects or space art. Meetings for SF related special interests (Star Trek, Star Wars, Dr. Who, fanzines, convention etc.).
If you like this idea, please help! This is an ambitious project. We can't do it without you!
