The Rift is a fannish term for the plot arc in season three of Xena: Warrior Princess when Xena and Gabrielle briefly become enemies. The Rift culminates in a scene where an enraged Xena ties Gabrielle up and drags her while galloping across the countryside on Argo. See the hercxena wiki entry.
These episodes and the resulting fallout on the characters' relationship divided fans strongly and much debate about them took place. Some fans either sided with Xena or Gabrielle, while others felt that the storyline only took away from the characters strong relationship that had been built to that point.[1] Many fanfiction writers at the time began diverging significantly from the show's canon so that they could avoid incorporating the plot into their work.
