Reactions and Reviews

Writing an original fiction character in an estabished series is incredibly hard to do, let alone done well. One has to make sure that the original character enhances the story without overtaking it, to become a part of the story without distracting from it.

Kikkimax excels at this with Detective Jay Brady. In fact, she won the 2002 Burton Award for Outstanding Original Character.

In Partners, Jay arrives in Major Crimes straight from Texas. Instead of being put off by the long haired, hippy freak, he's intrigued by him and asks Blair to join him on his first case, much to Jim's dismay.

In A Dirty Cop, Blair's been set up and Jim's powerless to protect him so he calls in some help from an unexpected source.

In Juanita and the Cowboy, Blair was in the wrong place at the wrong time. In order to keep him safe, Jim sends him to Texas to have Jay look after him, but things go from bad to worse. Jim and Megan are off to the rescue...or maybe not. *g*

In A Tinker's Dam, Brady's down on his luck and things don't get any better when he goes undercover as a hired gun.

I adore Kikkimax's sense of humor and the affection she has for these characters. It makes reading her stories a true joy. She takes her time with her plots and you never feel like she rushed through it to get to the next story. I have little doubt that you will find yourself wanting to read more in this universe once you get to the end.

I've also added a bonus, link. Not only do I adore Jay, but I also adore Jerry from another one of her series. I begged her to write a story where these two meet and she obliged me. This story, while rated PG, is a slash story between Jim and Blair. However, it will make little sense without reading the other stories first.[1]

This rec got me thinking about OC's in stories -- I'd just read several stories where I found the OC's beyond irritating and was thinking dark thoughts about them as a whole, and then I saw this rec and remembered that there are OC's I really *like* and Jay Brady is one of them.[2]
