The Newsies Rally, sometimes called The NML Rally, is the name used for many Newsies fan gatherings commemorating the anniversary of the original 1899 newsboy strike, the 1992 movie release date, or simply serving as a time for fans to convene.

The first known rally occurred in 1999. Later vents were held or planned under the same name in 2001, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009, usually in some way inspired by previously-occurring rallies. Very few actually seem to have been held.

Discussed Events

California, 2002

Fans planned to hold a rally in California on the anniversary in 2002.[1] An NML member in the list mentioned that some members were also holding a Cali rally in late June.

Canada, 2003?

In 2001, Canadian fans began discussing the possibility of holding rallies in Canada, suggesting camping trips or visiting historic newsie sites in the country. Their website hosts very little information on an actual event and was last updated in 2003.[2] The mailing list was last active in 2004, with no plans discussed after 2003.

Southern California, 2006

Organized by Jen.

We will be going to Disneyland, and/or Disney's California Adventure park, visiting the Newsies set at Universal Studios park, watching Newsies, dressing like Newsies, and meeting a few of the actual actors. (Definitely Trey Parker, possibly Arvie Lowe Jr., Marty Belafsky, David Sidoni, and others. Depends on who I can find at the time.)

[3]

24th (of July)

Arrive that day. It would pretty much be a travel day for all you guys. Then once you get here, we could all go out to dinner to get to know each other or something. And then you could go back to your hotel rooms and relax. :)

25th I’m kinda thinking Disneyland for that day. We could go the entire day, dressed like Newsies… yay! :D

26th Another whatever day. I think we could go “see the sites” like possibly search out the Brooklyn docks, and hang out in Long Beach area together, then come back to the hotel and watch Newsies-related stuff.

27th Go to Universal Studios to see the actual Newsies set. Universal Citywalk is right next to it, so we could hang out there, and in the park. If we don’t want to pay 50 bucks to get into the park, we could always view the set from Citywalk. There is a perfect view, and I’ve taken pictures from there and everything. (Even when you drive through the set in the tour, you hardly even stop long enough to soak it in.) Either way works out fine for me. (The tour is really fun tho, you go through different movie sets like Pirates of the Caribbean, and we went through War of the Worlds, and the Bruce Almighty and stuff. I always like to ride it over and over just to see the Newsies set as much as possible!) It takes about 40 minutes to get there from Anaheim.

28th If we’re all staying around Anaheim, we could spend some of the day in Downtown Disney, and if anyone wanted to go back to Disneyland for a while that would be fine. I think the tickets bought at DL work for two days, so this could be your second day. And at night…. TREY PARKER! 10 o’clock in Pasadena. We’ll need to allow about 40 minutes to get there as well. I’ll probably want to call ahead of time to let the hotel know that a group of us is coming, so I’ll need to know who’ll be attending that. MVPs concerts are a blast. Not only do you get to meet Trey, but you’ll get to hear him sing, and you get to dance the entire time. (Even if you can’t really dance like my friends and I… haha) It’s incredibly fun, and you should bring your cameras, and stuff you have to get signed by Trey!

29th This could be our beach party day. We’ll have a bonfire and everything, and just spend one last day together at the beach. Then, that night, we should go back and see Trey again. ;) Yes, it’s THAT fun. haha I always want to go back once I’ve been to see them.

30th

I think I am busy this entire day, so this would probably be our farewell date. Another travel day for everyone.

Online, 2007

In January 2007, 3Sweets and Davysbaby began planning an annual online rally to occur on the same day as the original strike. They asked to use video footage from the upcoming 2007 NYC rally to add to the experience.[5]

New York City, 2009

NMLers planned to hold a rally in New York City in 2009.[6][7]

Cancelled Events

New York City, 2001

Dot Conlon/Sundance Devine and Copper founded the newsiesrally mailing list in 2000 to plan for 2001. They planned to hold it July 27th to 30th. List members designed shirts and hats in a contest run by Amber, with discussion of using their sales as a fundraiser for the hotel stay. Muse, Katie B. of The Marrow of Life, created an official webpage. Dot and Copper stopped responding to messages in early 2001, and it was later confirmed that the event was cancelled.

New York City, 2002

Cancellation

Poor Morning Glory is so upset about the Newsie rally. She's worked so hard and even had the people on the NML pick the date but now everyone says itz not a good date, etc. She also talked to them about tshirts but they wanted an extended deadline for ideas but no one has sent in ideas. I got her to rethink the canceling the rally however. she wanted to. I'm gonna feel so bad if i can't go but mom's not looking like she's gonna say yes. argh.

New York City, 2007

Organized by Gamester Cladsl[14] and ShoeGoil. 15 fans RSVP'd for dinner and more planned to go to other events but not dinner, so it is safe to assume that the convention happened.

Day One: Friday, July 27, 2007:

1. Meet at Ellen's Stardust Diner at 4:00 pm for dinner. (You can visit the website for Elllen's here: Ellen's Stardust Diner )

I will be wearing a bright pink shirt with green writing and my support beam.. er... my best friend, Jay-Jay Blue, will be wearing an emerald green shirt with pink writing- just so you know who to look for. Also, I'll be checking people in and such, so just make sure I know you're there and mark you off =)

2. Go and see a Broadway show (only for those who want to.)

Day Two: Saturday, July 28, 2007:

1. Meet in Battery Park in front of the World War II memorial eagle statue at 8:30 am to catch an early ferry ride over to Ellis Island & Liberty Island. GET THERE AT LEAST 1 HOUR EARLY TO GET FERRY TICKETS. Or, purchase them online here. Or, call 1-866-Statue4. You only need to purchase tickets for the ferry, admission to Ellis Island and Liberty Island is FREE. *Note: I do not want to put a specific time frame on the Ellis Island/Statue of Liberty event, for it is impossible to tell how long it will take. We'll leave when people are ready to leave. The rally will be some attendees' first time in the city, and I do not want to cut anything short. For others who have been there before, I ask that you be considerate and patient with everyone else. =) Thank you. However, if you wish to leave before the group, you may do so.

Break for lunch

2. After we get back from Ellis Island, head over to City Hall Park (Newsies Square), which is bound by Park Row (once known as Newspaper Row). (Specific meeting time will be announced at the rally.)

i. Visit Pace University (old New York World building).

ii. Next to that is the old New York Times building.

iii. Visit the Horace Greeley Statue.

3. Walk Across the Brooklyn Bridge and yell off it, of course.

As of now, this is the end of the rally. However, I am working hard to find a place for all of us to watch Newsies together. (At the last rally, two attendees held a viewing in their hotel room.) Also, we may feel like going out to eat together (Little Italy, anyone?), shopping, etc. Unfortunately, none of this can be decided beforehand. So, we'll see what happens. Exciting, isn't it????? =D
