The story takes place in the days before the end of the Enterprise's first five year mission. Searching for a reason behind the disappearance of a number of ships from not only the Federation, but the Romunlan and Klingon navies as well, the crew of the Enterprise discovers that the answer may like in another universe. But once they get there, the question is not only will they be able to solve the mystery, but will they be able to go home again? What would stop them? The answer is the awesome power of the black hole, a power so great that it could shred the Enterprise and her crew into atoms! And if that isn't enough, who is... no, WHAT is the N'Ievan?
