Back stories for Illya are a staple of MFU fan fic. This one offers us an Illya who, in spite of being presented as a victim of systematic dehumanization, is still unaccountably heartless in a couple of critical (and violent) scenes. Nevertheless, the author provides him with a plausible past that makes much of his present understandable to us. Some weaknesses at the end do not preclude my thorough enjoyment of watching Illya cope with being a mistrustful young Soviet with heroic aspirations virtually choking to death at the hands of opportunity.[1]
