The Iron Giant is a 1999 American animated science fiction film using both traditional animation and computer animation, produced by Warner Brothers and directed by Brad Bird (his directorial debut). It is based on the 1968 novel The Iron Man by Ted Hughes and was scripted by Tim McCanlies from a story treatment by Bird. The basis of Bird's pitch to Warner Bros. was "What if a gun had a soul, and didn't want to be a gun?"

The Iron Giant was a commercial failure during its theatrical release; consensus among critics was that its failure was, in part, due to poor promotion from Warner Bros. However, it draws major nostalgia and love from fans who grew up in the 90s.
