The Great Turnabout is a scrapbook-themed, splot-profit zine featuring characters from The Great Ace Attorney video games.

About

The Great Turnabout is a SFW/PG-13 zine centered around Dai Gyakuten Saiban / The Great Ace Attorney, the spin-off Ace Attorney duology set in Meiji-era Japan and England at the turn of the nineteenth century. This zine will feature original art and writing about DGS characters we know and love, from Ryuu and Asougi to Susato and Sherlock (ahem, Herlock)! This zine is be a scrapbook zine, giving off the feeling that it was created by the characters of the games about the events within and surrounding the duology. The goal is that it will be formatted like a memento that the Wright family could find in their attic 120+ years after The Great Ace Attorney takes place.[1]

The project was first announced on July 11, 2021, as a non-profit fanzine featuring original work about the game's characters[2]. Interests ran from July 16 to August 8, 2021[3]. Mod applications could be submitted from July 13 to July 25th for the positions of visual art, finance, production, and support[4]. The contributor application window was delayed because the mod team needed to handle to restructure the project when one of the moderators went unexpectedly absent[5].

During this time, the project hosted a giveway to celeberate the international release of The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles on July 27, 2021[6]. Originally, the winner would receive an official acrylic standee of their choice, but the reward was later changed to an acrylic charm designed by Nao (nyansougi) when the acrylic standees sold out online before the giveaway was over[7]. The winners of this giveaway were delcared three months later on September 20[8].

After interest check results were evaluated, the mod team came out on September 25, 2021, announcing that the finalized theme of the project would be a scrapbook[9]. In addition to full page illustrations, The Great Turnabout would give page artists the opportunity to contribute pieces meant to take up smaller portions of the page as mementos and doodles on the scrapbook pages or in collaborations with writers. Writers could write "traditional" short story fanfiction or take an epistolary approach and create letters and journal entries in the point of view of the game's characters. This led up to the Contributor applications running from September 27 to October 24, 2021[10]. A reported total of 340 applications across all categories were submitted[11], resulting in a delay in releasing application results[12].

Preorders opened from March 23 to April 24, 2022 with the following pricing tiers[13]:

An early bird bonus of an additional print was rewarded to the first 70 physical bundle orders [14]. Stretch goals included an enamel pin at 100 orders, stamp washi-tape at 150 orders, and a magnet at 200 orders[15]. An additional stretch of a die-cut sticker was added at 325 orders[16]. A giveaway was run from April 10 to April 20, 2022 for a full bundle giveaway[17].

Shipping of preorders began on October 2, 2022[18], while digital goods were sent out on October 5, 2022[19]. Leftover sales began on December 5, 2022, and were expected to end on December 28[20]. Due to overwhelming demand, the zine's store closed early on December 26, 2022[21].

The project's social media account posted on January 6, 2023, that $10,707.19 USD was donated to the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund[22].
