The Giver is a dystopian children's novel written by Lois Lowry. The Giver Quartet includes three sequels set in the same dystopian world.
The original book has often been assigned reading for students ages 10-13 in the U.S.A., ensuring steady waves of new audiences.
Overview
Discussion and community
Along with Lowry's historical novel Number the Stars, The Giver has been credited with pioneering and popularizing dystopian fiction for middle grade and young teen audiences, covering topics such as political oppression, eugenics, euthanasia, and murder. The shocking nature of these topics, as well as the protagonist referencing pubescent sexual urges, have led some schools and libraries in the U.S.A. to exclude The Giver from their collections.
