Reactions and Reviews
This very large and handsome zine is a mix of pleasant, sentimental stories interspersed with poetry by Quigley (example, from “First Kiss”: In silent song my triumphant heart/sings glorious praises to the unseen benevolent forces/of the universe/that look down upon the union of our souls/as well as our bodies/and smile.) The sentiments are heartfelt, but the verse differs from prose primarily in page layout. Most readers will enjoy the romantic sentiments they express. Some of the fiction, especially Quigley's, tends to the highly decorated style of prose many readers will find romantic. Most of this large zine consists of Quigley's prose and poetry, and well done art by many gifted fan artists. The title derives from Quigley's long poetic fable of an encounter between Beauty and Beast in a magical garden. Less sentimental contributions from Kate Thomas (an essay); Toni Bogolub (“Rediscovered Love,” an Elliot/Emily story also involving V/C); and Linda Mooney (“The Candle or the Mirror,” in which C attempts to come to terms with having killed a child). Other fiction by Anita Hooson, M. Sue Waugh, Laura Davis, Debbie Ristick. Art by Kristy Effinger, Wendy Rae Smith, Rita Terrell, Pam Tuck Martin, Nora Leverson, Gail Striegle, Sue Krinard, Judy Ley Page, Kathy Fidge, and Jackie Kapke. The typesetting and design, by Kristy Effinger, raises this zine a substantial notch above the ordinary. Spinoff products (a t-shirt, et al.) are available based on artwork here: SASE for info. [1]
