The Flying Nun was an American sitcom starring Sally Field that ran on ABC for 82 episodes from 7 September 1967 to 3 April 1970. It was based on Tere Rìos's book, The Fifteenth Pelican (1965), about a nun, Sister Bertrille (played by Field), who could fly. The other nuns at the convent considered her talent to be a somewhat shameful eccentricity.
For the sake of plausibility, both book and show provided a minimal pseudo-explanation for Sister Bertrille's ability. The order to which she belonged to wore unusually wide headgear, and she was a slight woman; so the strong winds on the island could pick her up as if her hat were a sail. Sister Bertrille's "flight" was therefore more like gliding. She floated on the wind, with only some measure of control over her direction and altitude by putting up hand to tilt her hat.
