The Fault in Our Stars is a YA novel first published in January 2012. A film adaptation of the novel, directed by Josh Boone and starring Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort and Nat Wolff, was released on June 6, 2014.

Canon

The story is narrated by a sixteen-year-old cancer patient named Hazel Grace Lancaster, who is forced by her parents to attend a support group where she subsequently meets and falls in love with the seventeen-year-old Augustus Waters, an ex-basketball player and amputee. The title comes from Act 1, Scene 2 of Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar, in which Cassius says to Brutus: "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, / But in ourselves, that we are underlings."

Main Characters

Fandom

The book is popular among YA readers who enjoy sarcasm, wit and angst. When the movie came out, Tumblr exploded in gifsets and blogs devoted to the book, especially the main pairing. Some readers compare the book to Lurlene McDaniel, whose cancer love stories are what TFiOS has a reputation for being the polar opposite of. Some readers, though, felt it was just Lurlene McDaniel with the genders swapped.

The book is somewhat contentious due to internet opinion about John Green, which was heavily influenced by his interactions on Tumblr that some consider pretentious, self-aggrandizing, cringey, or otherwise annoying.

Fans who didn't like the book called it "pretentious" due to the speech and mannerisms of the main characters, but those who did like it have pointed out that this was intentional, especially on Augustus's end.
