Some Excerpts

TDWFR: You have been part of the fandom for a long time and would have seen Doctor Who go through many seasons; Classic Who heydays, the wilderness years and their accompanying spin-off media, the re-launch in 2005 and ever-rising popularity of Nu Who. Who was your first Doctor? What’s it been like to enjoy Doctor Who over such a period and see it become a lot more mainstream?

Nostalgia: I remember not believing it was actually coming back with RTD, because so many times it was Totally Coming Back and then it always turned out to be lies! Goodness, I’m old. My first Doctor was Seven, and he is still one of my favourite Doctors. My first companion was Mel but I loved Ace a lot more.

The mainstreamness (that could be a word) is great, it makes it more socially-acceptable to be a fan, yay! And all the fic and so on, that’s good as well. I could have done without some of the drama/wank, but I was on rec.arts.drwho before Nu Who happened and that group was basically a constant war of words about everything. So it’s not like the wank factor is new.

I am actually still surprised by how many Nu Who fans like the old series as well. I had expected that to remain a niche, but no they seem to like it. Hooray! It’s good, now there are a lot more people who understand the Doctor/Jamie true love, for example.

TDWFR: Tell us about the very first Doctor Who Fanfic you ever wrote?

Nostalgia: I had to go to fanfiction.net to find out, and it’s a Four and Leela story that I forgot about entirely. And I suspect it is a bit awful. It has nearly reached the age of consent, it’s flippin’ ancient. I don’t want to have to read it again and I can’t remember what it was about. I think it was about nothing, I had not yet reached my phase of “it is all deep and meaningful” intellectual wankery.

bloodsired: Like many other writers, you were writing fic with smut and since the Doctor have different personality in each incarnation. Do you have a set of guidelines on how to write that scene based on their personalities and pairings?

Nostalgia: That’s a good question, that is. It depends again on who is in the smut and why. But it’s pretty much the same for all of them. I do actually worry that I make the Doctor too hesitant about these things, especially when River is involved because I think they probably did it quite often so he’d have got used to it.

All I know is there are no good euphemisms for Female Bits, unlike the Male Bits where “the c word” has been used enough over the years to have become a bit invisible. Don’t use the word “willy” that’s just hilarious.

TDWFR: What advice can you give to fans who want to try writing fanfiction for the first time?

Nostalgia: I shall give you the advice I give myself when I am stuck: “Don’t worry, the fact that you used spellcheck means it’s automatically in the top 20% of fanfic on the internet.” Learn from the best and aim to be better than the worst.
