Some Excerpts

TDWFR: It’s obvious you have a great love for the character River Song. Can you tell us what you enjoy most about writing for this character?

Mygalfriday: I feel like that quote from Steven Moffat would be apt here but I can’t find it. Something about how River is beautiful and brilliant and mad and she brings the Doctor to heel and he just has so much more fun writing when River is in the show. That’s kind of how I feel about writing her as well. It’s just FUN. She’s a badass space vixen. She’s the Doctor’s equal. She has the most tragic backstory known to man and yet she still manages to be this incredibly strong, incredibly funny, and incredibly compassionate woman. Her character growth never fails to make me emotional. To go from this lost, frightened orphan to this rebellious and angry teenager who still schemes to get her parents together. And then she’s The Woman Who Kills the Doctor, and the woman who marries him. The woman who loves him and steals his hearts but also challenges him and saves him. She’s all of that at once and it’s an amazing and heartbreaking and complex story. And River is an amazing, heartbreaking, complex character. It’s not easy writing her, but it’s definitely worth it.

TDWFR: The Eleventh Doctor’s reign is over but the wonderful thing with fanfiction is that long after regeneration we can still tell more stories. Do you think you will continue to write a lot of Eleventh Doctor stories in the future?

Mygalfriday: I have a lot of ideas I still want to write and while I love writing River with the Twelfth Doctor and exploring the potential of their dynamic, the Eleventh Doctor is my Doctor. And he’s the face River married. As long as I’m writing Doctor Who fanfiction, there will always be more stories about him.

TDWFR: Writers can improve their writing through a variety of ways; through receiving reviews, discussions with other writers, reading other works and simply through practice over time. Which of those things has improved your writing the most?

I honest to God have no idea where I would be or where my writing would be without the betas that I’ve had over the years – not just in this fandom, but in the last one I wrote for. That girl in particular was just the most helpful darling and I owe her so, so much. Having other writers to exchange works with and to critique and comment is invaluable. When I’m just starting out in a fandom, though, reading the works of others is always helpful as I try to find the voices of the characters I’m going to be writing. I never start writing fic for a fandom without reading some of the popular works first. That being said, I don’t think I would have made it very long without feedback from readers either. Knowing other people are reading what I’m writing and enjoying it just makes me want to write faster and give them something. Like, “thank you for loving me here have this smut fic.”
