The Departed is the 2006 Academy Award-winning film directed by Martin Scorsese about two newly graduated cops from the Massachusetts State Police Academy—Billy Costigan and Colin Sullivan—who follow opposite sides of the law.
The Departed Fandom
Despite there being more canon evidence for the major character Sullivan being a closeted gay man, he is rarely featured in slash fanworks. The most popular pairing in the relatively small Departed fandom is the slash pairing of Billy Costigan/Sean Dignam (second in command of the undercover unit and Costigan's superior; portrayed by Mark Wahlberg). Anecdotal evidence suggests the popularity of the minor character of Sgt. Dignam in the fandom is possibly due to fans of the Wahlberg brothers following Mark from his previous projects to the Departed, and creating the bulk of the fanworks.
