The Charlie Bone Bad Shipping Fic Bingo, officially known as The Bad Shipping Fic Bingo and commonly referred to by participants as "Badfic Bingo", "Charlie Bone Badfic Bingo", or simply "the bingo", was a major fan work creation event in the Charlie Bone fandom which contributed to a large boom in fanfic publishing in the fandom on Ao3.

History

The idea for the bingo sprouted from a Tumblr post by @mossnrocksnbogwater, who said he wished that the series had a massive audience of younger fans who would romanticize Dagbert Endless and write humorously bad Charbert soulmate AUs,[1] prompting @lady-adeliza to propose a "bad soulmate AU fic challenge" and say she would write one for Granny-Hell.[2][3] This led @children-of-the-red-queen to start @cotrk-events and make the bingo.

Methods

Using a randomized selection of tropes crowdsourced from a Discord server and a custom-made random ship generator which was designed so that those paired would be in the same age range and not closely related to each other,[4] @children-of-the-red-queen made five-by-five bingo cards for individuals upon request. Some chose to use traditional bingo rules, others to use a certain number of prompts per fic, and others to incorporate every prompt into one.

Legacy

The bingo drew more members of the fandom into writing in general. Many ships on the cards had never had fanfic written about them before, and some afterwards had multiple. Soon in its aftermath, Granny-Hell, previously a meme but not a written ship, rose to the leaderboard of the ten most tagged ships in the fandom.

Notes and References

  1. ^ He eventually wrote "Golden Brown and Aquamarine", one of the two proto-bingo soulmate AUs
  2. ^ Tumblr post chain between @mossnrocksnbogwater, @luckypunk27, @lady-adeliza, and @dagbert-endless
  3. ^ The resulting fic was "We've known each other for so long (you know the rules and so do I)"
  4. ^ All of the Endowed are descendants of the Red King, but he lived a thousand years prior to the series, so descent from him is not enough for characters to count as related.
