When anonymous sex occurs in slash stories, it may be anonymous for them, but it isn't for us. We know very well who that intriguing stranger is. So the (female) reader is getting an emotional kick even if the (male) character isn't and indeed doesn't want to. Even when a character in a slash story really does go off and pick up a total stranger, it's because he's brooding over the really significant relationship— like Avon in the bar in "The Compass of His Desires" and various other stories, or Bodie in "Never Let Me Down." And even so, it's still not completely anonymous for us, because we know the protagonist, if not his partner. Would stories about two completely unknown men appeal to slash fans? I think not, unless perhaps there were some mechanism by which the story characters could be perceived as the couple of your choice. [1]

STORY: The Compass of His Desires

MUSE OF FIRE RESPONSIBLE: M. Fae Glasgow

HAS POOR VILA BEEN DRAGOONED INTO THIS SHITSHOW? —

WHY ARE BLAKE AND AVON DOOMED THIS WEEK? They are together but it is gothic and a terrible idea and dreamlike.

EDITOR’S NOTE: none

PROSE: So purple I had to screencap it out of context to show strangers on the internet to facilitate my healing process

Fire walk with me:

OVERALL: It is SUCH OTT Snowflake Avon trash and would, as Elviaprose pointed out, make more sense as a dream. But I actually like the crack turn ending, so idk what to think.[2]
