Reactions and Reviews
The Jenny Code was rec in March but from that story we still get wonderful little insights of life before The Jenny Code. I have to confess I have a huge, and I mean, a huge crush on the universe miss_porcupine created. We follow Lorne's team thru the gate, thru training, thru the most amazing bad luck (those poor, poor Lieutenants). Her OC are not just OC, they are fleshed out characters that you come to came about or develop a huge crush on. Going so far as "casting" some of them. The Care and Feeding of a CO is set in the post Conversion, post Aurora time line. It also came to be because of the wonderful City exploration challenge at sga_flashfic. It's a John and Atlantis love affair with a twist. Do check out the other little tidbits of the universe, it's expanding slowly. I just love it to pieces. The dialogs, the one liners, Lorne (so much love for her Lorne), John is in character and even, maybe a little more than what we see on the screen, don't get me started on Yoni Safir.[1]
With the vast majority of the show's focus on Sheppard's gate team, writers have a lot of room to maneuver when it comes to writing other teams. miss_porcupine has taken advantage of that to the fullest, writing a cast of original characters for Lorne's team that feel like they could have walked out of an episode and on to the page. The military is likely a very distinct culture on Atlantis, and she explores that culture beautifully.[2]
While Lorne's and Sheppard's encounter in "Die Verwandlung" was of a darker tone, this time it's just plain fun to watch Sheppard through Lorne's eyes. Domenika Marzione also writes great OCs and has the art of pairing lighthearted/funny with the typical "voices" of military characters down pat.[3]
