Canon
The film follows the stories of Manolo and Joaquín as they compete for the hand of María. Unbeknownst to them, the outcome of their relationships have become the focus of an otherworldly bet between La Muerte, the ruler of the Land of the Remembered, and Xibalba, the ruler of the Land of the Forgotten.
Fandom
Although Manolo and María wed at the end of the movie, a threesome pairing between María and her suitors is very popular in the fandom, as is the het pairing between the two dieties: La Muerte/Xibalba.
