Summary

Using new technology more insidious than anything they've ever developed before, the Romulan Praetor puts a plan into effect to force a wedge between the Klingon/Federation alliance. Attacking Gowron's home world of Arawn, there is only one starship and one commander who stands in their way: the U.S.S. Merrimac and William T. Riker.[1]

Author's Note

"The Arawn Gambit" is a story that has taken many sittings to complete and has had quite a long evolution in becoming what you see. Originally, may of the scenes came from a story I wrote explaining what happened to the Enterprise-C after it went back in time to defend the Klingon colony of Norendra 3. I submitted it to Pocket Books, and as happens to many Star Trek writers, it was rejected.

Sometime after this I met Denise through the Star Trek bulletin board. She read the story and sometime after that I asked her if she wanted to collaborate on a rewrite where we brought many of the scenes forward into a story that incorporated the crew and time period of 'The Next Generation". As you can see, she accepted. The story changed and over a period of year it became what you see now. Denise's touch adds warmth and humanity to a story that wanted to overwhelm the reader with its cold-hearted action and tactics. We decided to submit the new story to a couple of agents to see if it was good enough for Pocket Books in the new form and eventually landed Ms. Virginia Kidd. The manuscript went to Pocket, but unfortunately, was again rejected, something about it not meeting the "pattern" they want and that we see in the novels these days.

Denise and I are honored to present "The Arawn Gambit", a story that centers around Riker^s first command, and introduces the son of Gowron, for your perusal and hope you enjoy the story as much as we did bringing to you.
