Tarzan is created by Edgar Rice Burroughs, first appearing in 1912 in the serialized story "Tarzan of the Apes". He appeared in 24 books written by Burroughs, and in dozens of films, most famously portrayed by Johnny Weissmuller. He is the main character in the Disney film of the same name, and a minor supporting character in the video game, Kingdom Hearts.
Canon
In all canons, Tarzan is born to two parents from England, Lord and Lady Greystoke. After his parents die, he is raised in the African jungle by apes, called "Mangani" in the book series, but simply gorillas in the Disney film.

Controversy
Because the character and franchise were created in the early 1900s, the book and film series heavily use stereotyping, especially when it comes to native African peoples. Since the 1970s, adaptations have tried to remove the connotations.
