Talk:VidUKon
2012
The history section was previously shorter and organized as paragraphs. I did some reorganizing in order to add dates and citations for 2013 - 2024. However, there was a paragraph about 2012 that I'm not entirely sure what to do with. It discusses 2012 as a "a mythical event that no-one can remember or will admit to having attended" and alludes to entries on the official website. Based on the tone, it appears that some of this is a joke. It's unclear what amount is or isn't true, an April fools joke, etc. I tried to back-check the archived website and the older LiveJournal and Dreamwidth posts to figure out more, but I can't find anything there to confirm if this text is entirely made up, referring to actual events or jokes related to the con, etc. I don't want to delete it without more information, so I simply moved the paragraph to it's own section for 2012. Can someone with more first-hand knowledge-- and, ideally, citations-- intervene here? --Paintedmaypole (talk) 04:35, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
- VidUKon 2012 was online only , and ran for a few days over Hallowe'en on the former VidUKon website. VidUKon 2012 has been a running joke since 2015 - the idea being that it was an event cursed by something (exactly what varies) and no-one who attended either survived or can remember. We created a number of fictional vidshows on the website for 2012, most of which had vids that were simply clips from horror movies, but with at least one genuine vidshow hidden amongst them based on Festivids that were all deliberately upbeat and cheerful - the idea being that for the eldritch beings responsible for VidUKon 2012, that would be the equivalent of a horror show. During the buildup to the event LithiumDoll added the sound of a creaky door opening whenever the website was loaded. I prepared the bulk of the clips and vidshows as well as the digital conbook, and Llin prepared the Festivids show. We did something similar with VidUKon 1812, which was another online-only event, although that one wasn't horror-themed. BrokenMnemonic (talk) 10:39, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
- ETA: for context, at the wrap-up session for VidUKon 2011 a discussion was held over whether to try and run VidUKon every year or every 2 years, and it was decided to skip 2012 and hold the next VidUKon in 2013. BrokenMnemonic (talk) 10:41, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
