Talk:Filk Song Parodies
I'd like for us to add more fan commentary and remarks (pro, con, in-between), especially about this wonderful statement: "... a way to still enjoy the tune while deflating those who constantly call for it to be sung."
From fans listening to the filks, from the original creators of the filk, from the creators of the parody filks.
About "legalisms" and fan culture.
So many interesting topics! --MPH 00:33, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
Thank you to Mikiwatches for working on this. :-) --MPH 00:34, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
Mrs. Potato Head: Sure, I love cataloguing stuff. And you can pretty much see how influential a tune/song is as it becomes big enough to be parodied. There's no point in singing a Banned from Argo parody until unless you have been earwormed a million times by the original. And basically, as a teen, I was like, why does everyone keep throwing in Dorsai jokes or calling for Dorsai... this is so lame- since by the late '90s the Dorsai were not a big fandom thing at cons, but the Dorsai Irregulars lived on. But seriously, the fun of a filk circle and not just a performance is that the songs are in conversation with each other. --Mikiwatches (talk) 00:52, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
Things to think about adding (an aide memoire):
- Filkers often included a verse referencing the original singer by name (see the last verse of I Like Fire Lizards, or Canned By Argo)
- Often the original singer will record a version of the parody if it is clever or they are on good terms with person deflating them (see the Roundworm album of Bob Kanefsky songs, but there are countless examples of Julia Ecklar, Kathy Mar, Leslie Fish, etc singing the parody lyrics)

Proposing Another Move
Mikiwatches, I'm going to move all the filks to a page called List of Filk Parodies. That way the list itself is its own thing, and the history, comments, and topics about the filk parodies are their own page.
We have lots of pages on Fanlore that have list pages: https://fanlore.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3AAllPages&from=List+of&to=List+of+zz&namespace=0
That way we can link the list to this page, and also list any pages made for individual filks to it, too. --MPH 14:25, 7 January 2025 (UTC)
Makes sense- I usually just build list pages linked to the article, just this one started without an article. --Mikiwatches (talk) 15:00, 7 January 2025 (UTC)
- Sounds good. I'll make the new page. :-) --MPH 20:53, 7 January 2025 (UTC)
- I'm also going to rename this page Filk Song Parodies. This matches the list name. It also takes out the qualifier "famous" so that people don't need to evaluate what constitutes famous. MPH 20:59, 7 January 2025 (UTC)
