Tales of Valdemar and Beyond is a Mercedes Lackey zine edited by R. Nathaniel Waldbauer.

It originally had the title of "Compendium of Heraldic Lore and Legends."

It had a rough start getting off the ground, and fan were reminded of the failure of the proposed zine, Voices of Valdemar.

It garnered no further mention in Queen's Own.

The print run was 500 copies, which sold out completely in 2 months.

Some Comments Regarding Its Progress

All comments below are from Queen's Own:

  • [November/December 1989]:
Nathan Waldbauer has plans for a once-a-year "COMPENDIUM OF HERALDIC LORE AND LEGENDS," [a compendium is "a handy collection of a field of information",] meaning articles, stories, and artwork by Misty's fans based on Misty's works, "or be subjectively associated. (For example, an article on Witchcraft must be germaine to the religion Misty describes in BURNING WATERS.)" Nathan requests that all submissions be typed, double-spaced, on one side of 8-1/2" X 11" paper, in black ink. Letter quality computer type is acceptable, but no dot-matrix or handwritten submission will be read. [Editor's Comment: This is the way the pros [professionals] do it, children. So you serious writers should get in the habit now!] "If the writer wishes either a reply or the return of the manuscript, he/she must enclose a SASE with sufficient postage." "Artists are especially encouraged to submit black and white illustrations, either pencil or pen and ink. Submissions should be good-quality photocopies mailed flat. "No payment is offered for these efforts, however any and all contributors will receive a copy of the issue in which their work appears gratis.

  • [January 1990]:
Nathan Waldbaur [sic] has informed us that he's decided to change the name of his planned compendium [see the November-December issue] from Compendium of Heraldic Lore and Legends to "ales of Valdemar and Beyond." He says he did this mostly because he thought the first title was a little too stuffy and bookish. "While Elcarth might approve, I didn't think many others would." In his writer's and artist's guidelines he states, "It is an attempt to channel the creative outpourings of her [Mercedes Lackey] fans, giving them a chance to take on the role of 'co-creator' . . ." What a great opportunity for those of you who've written stories about your personae to see them in print! Remember, this is what Elizabeth (Betsy) Wollheim [from DAW] said to Misty, "Go for it.

  • [March 1990]:
    "Tales of Valdemar and Beyond

TALES OF VALDEMAR AND BEYOND", Nathan Waldbauer writes, will have a September 1st deadline for November publication. Nathan noted that he's recently received an increased number of requests for his guidelines and some beautiful artwork in addition to written material. Without naming names, [you know who you are,] I hope that Nathan as well as Stephanie will be on the receiving end of some of the Herald material I've had the privilege to see--poems, lyrics, Heralds' and Companions' portraits and stories. ONCE BURNED, TWICE SHY? "Don't be"! If you were one of those who sent material to the-one-whose-name-will-not-be-mentioned and were disappointed, and have therefore hesitated to even request guidelines from Nathan or Stephanie for fear of being disappointed "again", I want to urge and encourage you to lift up your chins, throw back your shoulders, and "get out those stamps and envelopes"! As Judith says, "There is no failure, only feedback."

  • [September 1990]:
"Tales of Valdemar and Beyond": Nathaniel Waldbauer says the first copy of our first annual zine will soon be ready.

  • [December 1990]:
There has been no word yet on our first annual zine, "Tales of Valdemar and Beyond." My check, too, has been cashed without further acknowledgement.

  • [February 1991]:
"Tales of Valdemar and Beyond," I've been reassured, is nearly ready. Those of you who sent your checks to Nathaniel some months ago can expect your copy of TOVAB by the end of this month.

  • [April 1991]:
"Tales of Valdemar and Beyond" is available now.
