Author's Foreword
Dear readers,
This is my first attempt at writing a fanzine, I never realized it would be so much work! This book will have left the printing press only one day before this convention. In the future I hope to have a staff more reliable than myself and a few friends, T'rayza has been in my dreams for at least three years. She had come to life for my close friends long before this fanzine was even outlined. There comes a time when dreaming and verbally telling stories about a character is no longer satisfactory. It's time to take pen in hand and share your dream with others.
Realizing that I am, an amateur writer has caused me many a sleepless night. Will anybody read it? Will they be interested? Will they buy it in the first place? Why don't I forget about the whole thing?! Well, I couldn't forget about it, so now you're holding the result.
I hope you enjoy the book. Read it for fun; realizing that even the main plot may be fantasy gone wild. Many people reading 'zines for the first time don't realize that the 'fan' in fanzines could mean two things: the reader is a fan, or the book is the author's fantasy based on Mr. Roddenberry's fantasy. I have a friend who won't read 'zines, because he feels the story lines conflict with the series too often. Loosen up, fellah! Use your imagination!
My writing and vocabulary have improved drastically while I've been working on this project, Reading the book over, I find many things I would like to change. It's too late, of course, but next time I'll make fewer, or at least, different mistakes. My characterization will improve also. If enough interest is shown I may even revise this 'zine at a later date.
Please forgive the artwork I put in. Some of it is mine, I know as much about drawing as a fly knows about the dog whose stuff he's sitting in. If I can't improve on my artwork I'll have to find more talented artists to help me. One girl couldn't hack illustrating the entire book. I purposely put the illustrations in the table of contents so that you could tell who I was trying to draw!
I'd like to thank my girlfriends. Rose for her undying support, Nancy for proof reading my first draft, and for her beautiful artwork. And Elizabeth, who kept offering to help me while I, with my bearish behavior, never found time to call her and discuss anything. Sorry Lizzie, I also thank God for letting me survive for another days journey.
Enjoy and look for more!
Sample Interior
"The Cadets" -- Nancy ("Peter Rankin sat at a table in the officer's lounge. 'David, what time is the vulcan girl coming aboard? I'm sick of waiting around and doing nothing.' 'Doing nothing? Pete, you're crazy. This is a starship, a remodeled one at that. We've got the good life; quarters on the officer's deck, access to the officer's rec room, and mess hall. We didn't even have to go to Academy. Starfleet just made room for us in the bed and tucked us in.'")
"T'rayza and Spock" -- D.F. Wilkins ("'Look, I don't need anything extra from you, Spock, You just keep teaching me what you know; just like with the other cadets.' T'rayza'e voice rose steadily. 'Whatever I do, how ever far I go, whoever helps me along, you aren't going to take any credit for it! What happens to me won't be another feather in your vulcan cap.'")
"Romantic Supper" (with John Cole) -- D.F. Wilkins ("'That was nice of you.' T'rayza looked at her plate. Steak, salad, corn on the cob, baked potatoe, fresh hot rolls, macaroni and cheese, and green olives. On the cart: Fresh apple pie, cherry tarts, more tronia and an insulated bowl of vanilla ice cream.")
"Spock and T'rayza in the gym" -- D.F. Wilkins ("Most men couldn't maneuver on the uneven parallel bars. It was still basically a women's sport, but as usual Spock mastered the bars and most other gymnastic apparatuses, Spock had mounted so easily and was gliding noiselessly through the routine. It was T'rayza'a secret weapon. The routine began with the sim ple moves of centuries ago and ended in a series of wild jumps and leaps that promised to send chills up even a lematya's spine."
"Sylvida Argues with the Klingons" -- Nancy ("Kolott slapped Sylvida in the mouth, 'You dare defy me woman?! I'll have this planet turned into a molted ball of lava! You will put an end to this meet! You'll do so immediately. The ship will be here in four hours with another load or those disgusting Broghals. I want them fed and clothed, ready to leave for the neutral zone by morning.'")
