The Sweet Dreams Sanctuary was a small fanfiction archive primarily for writing based on the Lord of the Rings, although they accepted fanfiction for other fandoms and original writing as well. The welcome message from February 2007 read:

Welcome one and all. We hope you enjoy your stay here. Feel free to ask questions and explore. We are open to all fandoms and pairings among consenting adult fictional characters and are always open to expanding the archive. Please, don't be shy and join us.

A February 2007 capture of the Categories page shows eighty-two Tolkien fanfiction stories, compared to nine stories for other fandoms (plus three poems and seven original works).[1]

The Sweet Dreams Sanctuary was built using eFiction open-source software and also included a forum, as well as an associated Yahoo! Groups mailing list and LiveJournal community. Based on Wayback Machine captures, the archive appears to have had a brief existence, from 2005 to 2007. The administrators identified the site's purpose as providing a place for authors to discuss and receive feedback on their stories in a way that was kind and supportive. The archive's homepage in February 2005 states the following:

Welcome...The purpose of this library is to collect works by writers and artists no matter what form or style it is. This Library is connected to a forum for the discussion of the works presented. These discussions are for the sole purpose of encouraging writers and improving fiction works in a healthy atmosphere without any hostile feelings. No one on either sites is the Big Kahuna. We are not here to judge but to discuss and improve much like a couple of friends reading an article over a cup of coffee or tea or whichever it is you prefer.[2]

The site's footer provides further elucidation on the founders' motives that again point to kind and respectful interactions as a motive for creating the site:

This site is a joint effort of two souls who got tired of the hassle of fanfiction archives and decided to make a place where peace and creativity go hand in hand. I.E. NO Shmucks...we're not affiliated with any major sites or companies but we do appreciate respect for the material displayed and the authors and artisits.[2]
