Description

Book club-style "Smallville" fan fiction recs list modelled after BetterBuffyFics, and sister list of the Smallville Fan Fiction Workshop.

Are you tired of wading through the Mary Sues, slot-A tab-B PWPs, and general drek? Looking for well-written fiction with actual plot and characterisation? Are you new to Smallville fandom, and looking for a place to start reading? Did you just read the best story ever and are desperate to share your discovery with other readers? Are you devouring anything and everything, and discovering that you'd like to make sure the cream rises to the top? Then this list is for you!

Any pairing, any rating, any genre... help seperate the wheat from the chaff.

Recs will be archived in the links section, and well as at Smallville Fan Fiction Resources.

Please format your subject line in the following manner:

REC: "Title" Rated x (Slash or Het or Gen)

For example:

REC: "Prophet of Eden" Rated NC-17 (Slash)

or

REC: "The Flood" Rated PG (Gen)

For the purposes of this list, "Gen" fiction would be any fiction which does not contain adult material, and/or is not a romance, or focus on a specific romantic pairing.

Okay, welcome messages are in place, and we have two mods: joan the english chick and reema. Here's my intro, and the recs that have been thus far posted to the website will be posted shortly!

NAME: Tara LJC O'Shea

LOCATION: Chicago

FAV SV CHARACTERS: Lex and Chloe

FAV EP/ SCENE / WHATEVER: The tag of "Jitters" stands out as the scene what hooked me. Also love Chloe losing the Torch in "Rogue."

WHAT DO I LOOK FOR IN FANFIC (RELATIONSHIPS, GENRE, ETC): I like plot. I also particularly love fiction with stays as close to series canon as possible in terms of tone and characterisation as well as continuity. Not much of a fan of wild AUs or "What if?" type stories, although I have been known to enjoy some stories set in the characters' future.

WHAT WILL I NEVER EVER READ: Not a fan of Mary Sues or those weird reincarnation fics where you find out everybody was Lex or Clark's lover in ancient Rome, or Smallville is re-written as a Grimm's fairytale, etc. Also, and this may sound like anathema, but not much of a PWP fan at all. Like I said above, I like plot. Plot gives me The Happy.

WHAT DO I READ THAT'S NOT FANFIC: A lot of folklore and fairy tales. Fiction-wise, I have a serious thing for hardboiled detective fiction (Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, James Ellroy, etc.), urban fantasy (Neil Gaiman, Charles de Lint, Emma Bull, etc.), fantasy (Terry Pratchett, Guy Gavriel Kay) and weird speculative fiction and alternate history fic (currently reading William Sanders' The Wild Blue and the Grey" and I would sell my sister for a copy of "Journey to Fusang")

DO I WRITE? Boy, howdy. Since I was 16, starting in "Robin of Sherwood" fanzines and on-line since 1992 I've traipsed through too many fandoms to count, but most notably "Forever Knight", "Earth 2", "Gargoyles", "Voyager" and "Angel". "Smallville" is just my latest love affair, which has yet only produced 3 stories.

OTHER SHOWS I LOVE: I swear this list gets shorter every year... Currently airing, love Gilmore Girls, FarScape, and am hanging in there on Buffy and Angel. of all time? That's easy... EZ Streets, Lois & Clark, Due South, Quantum Leap, The Flash, you name it.[2]
