Surge is a popular character across Sonic's comic sub-fandom. After being introduced into the official mobile games she gained further notoriety, similar to when comic exclusive characters Tangle and Whisper were made playable in those same games years earlier.
In November 2021, Nathalie Fourdraine, an artist working with the IDW Sonic comic team, posted an animatic of Surge using the Sonic Spinball options music, which popularized Surge's associate with the track. A remix of the track was later used in the Surge Generations mod trailer, further solidifying the connection.
Vivian Reed is seen by some as the the unofficial voice for Surge thanks to her work in various fandubs, fangames and mods.
Fan reception
It's interesting to see how much people have already taken to her. I remember people thinking Tangle was cool when she was revealed, but this is a whole different level.But I see why. She's got a great character design, and even that first art of her we saw was bursting with personality. This is also the first proper rival for Sonic since Blaze, with her being a clone hedgehogish creature and all. Plus her being an Ashura/Scourge reference for those hardcore fan browny points. It's all a perfect storm to get people into her. Hopefully the actual character herself sticks the landing.[1]
