Succession is an American comedy-drama television series created by Jesse Armstrong that aired on HBO. The series focuses on the lives of the Roy family, who own the media conglomerate Waystar RoyCo, and the adult siblings who vie to be their father's successor.

The series aired from June 3, 2018, to May 28, 2023.

Canon

The first season introduces audiences to the Roy family, who are the owners of the NYC-based global media company Waystar RoyCo. The family includes aging patriarch Logan Roy, and his four adult children: estranged eldest son Connor, ambitious Kendall, immature Roman, and cunning Shiv. As Logan declines in health, his children compete for the coveted role of future CEO. In the first season, Kendall's repeated attempts to undermine and overthrow his father are the main focus of the show.

The second season focuses on Logan's attempts to maintain control of the company. As the threat of a hostile takeover looms over his head, Logan seeks to acquire the rival media company PGM, owned by the Pierce family. Meanwhile, a scandal is brewing, which lands Waystar RoyCo in deep legal trouble and threatens everyone's positions within the company.

The third season opens immediately where the last season left off. In the wake of Kendall's betrayal, the family scrambles to keep control of the company and the public narrative.

The fourth and final season focuses on the family's struggles in the wake of a huge loss. As Kendall and Roman scheme to keep the company in family control, Shiv allies herself with a Swedish businessman who wants to buy Waystar RoyCo. Meanwhile, the country is facing a particularly contentious presidential election and an increasingly heated political landscape.

Inspirations

Many fans and critics have noticed that Succession seems to be inspired by the works of William Shakespeare.[1][2][3][4][5]

Series creator and writer Jesse Armstrong has stated that the fictional Roy family is inspired by various real-life famous media families, such as the Hearsts, the Murdochs, and the Mercers.[6][7][8]
