Reactions and Reviews
The first thing you have to do with this story is suspend your disbelief. After all, the idea of the tight-assed, up-tight Kirk we saw in ST:TMP letting go so completely is a bit unbelievable. Once you do that, however, you're in for a good read. The entire story flows smoothly with background slipped in unobtrusively. The bantering between Spock and McCoy which leads up to Kirk's escapade is very reminiscent of the series characters' many verbal jousts. Kirk's performance and the more "private" dual performance that follows are very erotic and well-written. The final scene is funny and ends the story on a perfect light note. [1]
This story is destined to be a classic. All three of the main characters behave realistically and the striptease itself is everything Spock said a striptease should be. The only complaint I have is the ending. It should have stopped with the 'climatic' moment between Kirk and Spock. [2]
Some K/S writers seem to have the idea than an erotic story should be a long plotless sex scene, but Phaedra Morgan shows us with "Striptease" that you can write a plotted story that is highly focused on eroticism. I know that some fans would object that Kirk wouldn't perform a public striptease while he's bonded to Spock. Yet it seems to me that Kirk has always had a well-defined streak of exhibitionism, and that Spock needs to accept that part of Kirk in order to maintain a bonded relationship with him. This is, in fact, what Spock does in this story. I find it admirable that Spock is understanding about Kirk's need to "flaunt it", and that he even enjoys it because this need is a part of Kirk. It gives me hope for the long-term stability of K/S. [3]
STRIPTEASE takes the viewpoint that Kirk's adventurous nature can be carried into the personal arena as well as the professional one we are familiar with. Some readers may have difficulty with the premise. The emphasis in this piece is unadulterated sex leavened with humor. [4]
"Striptease," by Phaedra Morgan, is another story that was asking a lot of the reader's belief in that Kirk decides to perform before an audience so that new lover Spock can win a bet with McCoy. The situation was handled better than any I've seen along this theme and didn't have the rushed ending that so many of them do. [5]
