Strangers and the Strange Dead by Kipler is a haunting story about abductees who start showing up in the woods one chilly winter. A curious coffee shop worker documents the odd happenings and the pain of lives left unfinished. Kipler's prose is a joy to read, as careful and ponderous as the story itself. The ending is especially moving, and very prescient of Kipler since it was written before the XF episode "Requiem." [1]
I'd been looking for this. I'm so glad I found it again. So -- what is it like, coming back from the dead? This might tell you. Gods know, Chris Carter didn't. <grr>[2]
2000
She's back from a too long hiatus with Strangers and the Strange Dead. This is a third person look at a Scully of the future: still searching for something and investigating. In this case the investigation is of the mysterious reappearance of strangers in a small New England town. I love the way this woman writes. She always creates a story that cocoons the readers in her world and gives away just enough.[4]
2014
This story is perfect. It's on my ten best short fics for The X-Files, maybe for fanfiction, period. I really like stories that are told from an outside POV. The opening to this piece still gives me the shivers, the ending still astounds me.[5]
2016
Written right after the fandom found out David Duchovny would not be a lead actor in Season 8, this story is simultaneously about a particular moment in X-Files fandom history and also simply beautiful.[6]
