Storm is a Daniel/Janet story by Bryn.

Reactions and Reviews

This is a short, bittersweet post-Meridian story. During a thunderstorm Janet reflects on the loss of Daniel and what he meant to her.

The description of the storm gives the vignette an atmosphere of Gothic romance - so much so that I'm reminded of "Wuthering Heights" and expect Daniel to appear out of the storm. But there's no such lovers' reunion here, only Janet's lonely thoughts of Daniel and a glimpse into her grief after losing him, even though she knows he isn't truly dead.

I like this story because it resonates so well with series canon. There isn't much on screen chemistry between Daniel and Janet but I do remember a few, rare moments that suggest potential. That, in essence, is what the vignette is about: the loss, not just of a friend, but also of an opportunity.

It's well written, though some readers will find the imagery a little overdone. This isn't the strong, capable Janet we are used to seeing on screen, so again, I think some readers will find this out of character. It's also true, however, that there is no real canon for who Janet is in private and this is a glimpse of a very private moment in her life. My only real complaint is that this should be longer; I wanted to know how Janet moved on from this moment.

Rain as a symbol of tears that cannot be shed is, to me, a classic Romantic image. The use of it here is edging toward cliché but I don't think it actually gets there. I couldn't honestly recommend this story to everyone but if you're in the mood for bittersweet, romantic imagery this is a brief but satisfying read.[1]
