Staying Present is a Jim/Blair story by Fluterbev.

Reactions and Reviews

Blair has suffered a very real case of amnesia where his old life exists only in fragments, but Jim is still there for him. However, someone is threatening to pull the pair apart, and threatening to send Jim to prison.[1]

Fluterbev is one of my favourite writers and this is my favourite of all her stories - I can’t believe it hasn’t been rec’d here before.

Blair has brain damage – but this is not your usual cliché h/c story. The characterization is perfect, as you’d expect from a Fluterbev story. Jim, whose voice tells the tale, is deep and dark and angst-ridden. Blair, though the victim in the tale, adds the perfect touch of humour and light, dealing with his situation in the same pragmatic, no-nonsense way that canon-Blair would.

The main reason I love this story is the brilliant characterisation, but there’s a solid case-plot background and a delicious little twist towards the end.[2]

I’m not a big fan of hurt/comfort fic, but this one is special. There’s something so true about how these men face whatever life throws at them, and I find myself drawn back to re-read it often. Originally written for a Secret Santa gift fic exchange. Enjoy.[3]

Post-series, Blair was kidnapped, tortured and dropped from a four-story building on orders of one of Jim’s enemies. As a result he’s suffered permanent brain damage in the form of amnesia. Jim has resigned from the PD and they have become lovers. Their new life together is fulfilling. Out of the blue they receive the shocking news that the man who ordered Blair’s assault might be getting a new trial on a technicality, and could be released.[4]
