Starover was a general science fiction club for the Fredericton, New Brunswick (Canada) area. Its formal name was Starover Fredericton.
It may have developed into the Fredericton Science Fiction Society.
It published a monthly newsletter also called Starover.
Its Beginning
The club appears to have been founded in late 1978 or early 1979. Its first newsletter "paid and posted" by the club was published on March 23, 1979, although there appear to have been a few issues before then paid for by club officers. This first "official" newsletter includes reports about club meetings from February and March 1979, but at least some officers were already in place by that February meeting, while other officers were selected at the February 1979 meeting. Initial officers were: President, John Mansfield; Vice President, Fred Brown; Secretary, Pam Ritchie; Treasurer, Bram Nelissen; Newsletter Editor, Fred Brown.
The club was a general Science Fiction club, with interests in books, movies, and gaming -- esp. Dungeons & Dragons. They initially met at the "Fantasy Forest" bookstore in Fredericton. Club activities included an SF book swap, outings to see SF movies, occasional movie screenings after meetings, and weekly D&D games. They also sponsored an SF TV show for the local community access TV channel. The club was affiliated with the L-5 Society as early as 1979.
The Newsletter
The newsletter Starover was initially published on legal sized paper, 8 1/2" x 14". The Canadian Fancyclopedia reports that this newsletter was still being published at least through 1983. Fred Brown was the editor until May 1979. The May 1979 issue was edited by Linda Ross, a frequent contributor to earlier issues, but she writes that they are looking for a new editor.
Continuation as the Fredericton SF Society
Although there may have been a break in the club, the Canadian Fancyclopedia says that the same club was active at least for 1993-1997 as the Fredericton SF Society, with the clubzine, Fast-Forward.
