A Splash page is

The page of a Web site that the user sees first before being given the option to continue to the main content of the site

On fansites splash pages could feature artwork or animated gifs, a quick summary about the site so visitors could decide whether they wished to enter, or a warning that the site contained mature or explicit content or materials dealing with same sex relationships.
