FAQ

What is this?

It’s a solavellan themed gift exchange! If you participate you will have to create a piece of fanfiction or fanart in the allotted time period for the person you match with, and will also receive a piece of fanfiction or fanart in return.

Can I write for pairings other than Solavellan?

This is our first time moderating an exchange, so for this time around, we’re only allowing Solas/Lavellan. If all goes well, our next go around will likely be a general Solas/Anyone event!

Do I need to use a female Lavellan for this?

You do not! Male and Non Binary Lavellan will also be available to request or offer.

Can I request my own OC for fic and art? Definitely! While the only actual requirement for gifts is that they not violate any DNWs, we highly encourage participants to include likes, preferences, prompts, and information about their own OCs in their sign ups. However, as we cannot and will not require writers to create fic featuring other people’s OCs if they aren’t comfortable writing someone else’s character, we ask that you include more general likes and prompts regardless. We want everyone to have a chance at both receiving a gift they’ll enjoy and giving a work they were comfortable creating.

What are the minimum requirements?

For fanfiction the minimum is 800 words, for fanart it’s a sketch with clean lines. Both digital and traditional art are permitted.

How do I sign up?

Head over here and follow the instructions. You will need an Ao3 account to sign up, so if you don’t have one please contact the mods and we’ll get you an invite.

Alright, how does this whole thing work?

May 23rd — May 30th: Signup period. Please make sure to submit your application before the deadline!

May 31st — June 1st: Matching and assignments sent. Once the sign-up period is over, we will match you with your recipient based on your preferences. Then once matching is complete, you will receive an email with your assignment. (If you haven’t received yours by June 2nd please contact the mods!)

June 1st — July 5th: Create your fanwork. Remember that you only need to fulfill one of your assignment’s requests. Also keep in mind that this is an anonymous exchange, so don’t let your recipient or the world in general know who you are! You must post the completed work by June 5th, but you may continue editing until work reveals.

July 11th: Work reveals. On this day the collection will officially open, and works will be revealed to the public. The creators are still anonymous at this point.

July 18th: Author reveals. On this day the creators’ identities will be revealed. You can now post your fic or art on your own social media sites. (If you post on tumblr make sure to mention us at @solavellahellexchange so we can reblog it!)

Oh no, I can’t complete my assignment in time! What do I do?

Please reach out to a mod as soon as possible! The sooner you tell us the easier it will be for us to find a pinch-hitter and to ensure your match will get their gift.

What are pinch-hitters?

A pinch-hitter is someone who’s willing to take on an assignment that was dropped. Keep in mind that this could mean working with a short deadline. Any available pinch-hits will be posted on our tumblr and discord.

What are treats?

Treats are extra fanworks created in addition to an assignment. You can create a treat for anyone taking part in the exchange, and you don’t need to have signed up to post one! You can browse the requests summary here.

Note: treats have no minimum requirements or a deadline, but they still need to follow the respective DNWs.

What are Do Not Wants(DNWs)?

In broad terms, DNWs are things you would not like to receive in a gift. They can be general (for example: No E Rated fics, No Modern AU fics, etc) or specific, whether it’s about kinks (for example: no a/b/o, no bdsm, etc) or triggers (for example: no character death, no suicide, etc) or everything in between. Basically anything that would make you uncomfortable to interact with in a fanwork is a DNW.

Note: any fanwork you create must respect your recipient’s DNWs. If you have doubts or questions about what constitutes a DNW you can contact the mods and we’ll get in touch with your recipient. If you’ve received a gift that doesn’t follow your DNW please let us know.

How do I post to the collection?

If you want to post your assignment: on Ao3 go to your dashboard and then to Post New. If you scroll down to the Associations tab and to Post to Collections / Challenges, there will be an automated box with your assignment. All you need to do is check it on and Ao3 will do the rest.

If you want to post a treat: go to the collection dashboard. On the top right corner there will be an box saying Post to Collection. Clicking it will take you to the normal Ao3 page for posting new work. Scroll down to the Associations tab and on the Gift this work option type in the Ao3 username of the person you’re gifting this treat to.

Note: any works you submit to the collection won’t show up on your profile until Author Reveals. But don’t panic, you can still access them! If you want to edit your works at any point, go to your Ao3 dashboard and then to your Statistics tab. All your works will be organized by fandom, so simply scroll down until you find the one you’re looking for.
