Reactions and Reviews
This was one of my favorite stories this year. From the first story I have read of hers, "Official Channels" Rocky has impressed me with the deft way she handles political themes. I don't mean by that the partisan or the ideological, which too often makes its tedious way into fan fiction, I mean the timeless and universal dynamic of power and relationships, both those between individuals and between and within societies. Rocky writes about the machinations and interrelationships of the Star Fleet brass so well I feel I'm there. But "Sinners and Saints" is also about those Voyager left behind, and this is at the heart of the story, how the families find both solace in each other and solidarity in fighting for justice for all the Voyager crew, whether Maquis or Equinox. All the characters and their interactions are finely and vividly drawn here, including original characters, whether it is Owen Paris and Necheyev among others in a meeting at Star Fleet Headquarters, or Anne Carey and Gilmore's sister meeting together to support each other and those traveling home on Voyager. I love how Rocky weaves together canon and develops what would be the touchy issues about Voyager. "Sinners and Saints" is an outstanding episode in the virtual season. [1]
So often the focus is on Voyager and the crew's adventures in the DQ and it is nice to finally get a story that focuses on the homefront in the AQ. This is probably the best AQ story I've read this year. I love how we get the two perspectives - the admirals and their politicking and all of the issues they bring up regarding Voyager as well as the friends and families of the Voyager crew - Anne Carey in particular. Both sides are deftly handled and well-written. Bravo for another excellent story, Rocky. [2]
In this AQ story, Rocky does a great job showing the internecine politics of Starfleet and the bonds that formed among the Voyager families. Very enjoyable. [3]
