Shoot-em'-ups, or shortened to just "shmup", are a genre of video games that focus on tactical fire and dodging projectiles and enemies; since its simple births in the early 1960s, the genre has since diversified and evolved to include elaborate storylines, lore, and more energetic music and mechanics, ranging from bombs, scoring systems, and flowchart-esque story paths. In fandom, shumps are predominantly within the realm of sci-fi, with the exception of Touhou and other franchises/series, both official and fannish, which are commonly within the fine line of fantasy, although some entires may feature non-fantasy tropes present within the story and gameplay, in some form or another.
